Common Area Pests We Eradicate
We use “greener” or less toxic products as well as non-chemical techniques while still maintaining excellent control of the pest. We treat for the following pests: Carpenter Ants, Other Ants, Wasps, Yellowjackets, Hornets, Bees, Rats, Mice, Spiders, Fleas, Cockroaches, Termites.
CARPENTER ANTS
Carpenter ants are one of the most common pest species in the Pacific Northwest. These ants are normally a large black ant but can be as small as 1/4 inch. Carpenter ants do not eat wood but instead chew their way through wood causing damage to wood structures. Most problems with these ants occur during the spring and summer months but can sometimes be seen in the fall and winter as well. Many people are alerted to the presence of these ants in the spring when they see the large flying ants inside their homes. This is a sign of a problem that should not be ignored. These flying ants are evidence of a well-established carpenter ant colony within the structure. (More information on carpenter ant control)
OTHER ANTS
After the carpenter ant, the next most common ant pest in the Puget Sound area is the odorous house ant—so named from the slight odor produced when the ant is crushed. The odorous house ant, a tiny dark brown ant, is nothing but a nuisance. However, the large numbers and difficulty in control these ants tends to leave the average homeowner with a feeling of helplessness. Many times, trails of these ants can be seen feeding on liquids and sweets found in the kitchen and bathroom areas of a home. Unfortunately, many of the over-the-counter “bug sprays” tend to make this ant spread throughout the house, thus increasing the need to call a professional pest control company for elimination. RATS / MICE
Rodents, rats and mice, are common throughout the Puget Sound area. They are quite adapted to living with people. In residential situations, the most common points of entry are usually through a damaged vent screen leading into the crawl space (under the house) or through a poorly maintained crawl space door. Once inside this warm area, rodents make a home in the insulation or make their way up into the living area of the home looking for food. Rodents will chew on just about anything. This can lead to damaged wiring and plumbing within the structure. Rodent urine and feces within the crawl space or attic can eventually cause an odor problem within the structure. STINGING INSECTS
Wasps, hornets, and yellowjackets may be beneficial out in the natural world, but become a dangerous nuisance when they nest in and around the home. The nests, most often encountered in the summer and early fall months, can be found almost anywhere. Common nesting sites in residential areas include attics, crawl spaces, wall voids, under the eaves, in trees/bushes, and underground. These insects can sting multiple times and will aggressively guard their nests if provoked. Many times, wearing a bee suit is necessary to get close enough to eradicate these nests safely. SPIDERS
Even though 99% of the spiders found in the South Sound area are harmless, the presence of large numbers of spiders in the home can be alarming to many homeowners. During the late Summer and Fall, spiders tend to be larger in size than during other times of the year. Before winter they are also more likely to wander in search of a mate, resulting in more spiders found inside of homes.
FLEAS
Fleas, when found in the home, are nearly always found in association with dogs or cats. A majority of the time, cats or dogs that wander the neighborhood pick up fleas and bring them home. This initiates the flea life cycle inside the house. Flea infestations are possible any time of the year, but are most common during the warmer months. Regular vacuuming and pet grooming can help control these pests if the problem is minor. However, with heavy infestations, treating both the pets and floor surfaces of the home can be necessary for complete eradication of the fleas. (More information on flea control)
COCKROACHES
Largely due to improved control techniques, cockroaches are not as common as they once were in the Puget Sound area. They can still be difficult to control, however, so cockroaches will probably be with us until the end of time. Although the homeowner isn’t immune to a cockroach infestation, most roach problems are found in businesses and apartment complexes. They easily travel the plumbing and electrical lines to get from one part of the building to another. (More information on roach control)
